Distance and driving time
The main (south) entrance of Akagera National Park is about 110–120 km east of Kigali, around 2.5 hours by road. The route runs through Rwamagana and Kayonza on paved roads, followed by a shorter unpaved stretch to the gate.
Self-drive or with a guide
Akagera allows self-drive game drives. At the gate you pay the park fees, collect a map and can hire a freelance park guide who rides in your car. A guide is worth it on your first visit: they know where the animals have been seen recently.

Which car to choose
The tracks inside the park are unpaved, with sand, rocks and mud in the rainy season. We strongly recommend a high-clearance 4x4 such as the Toyota Prado or our safari car, which also gives better views over the grass.

Tips for a great day in Akagera
- Leave Kigali very early. Animals are most active in the early morning and late afternoon.
- Fill up with fuel in Kayonza before you reach the park.
- Bring water, snacks and binoculars.
- Stay in your vehicle except at marked areas.
- Allow time to drive back to the gate before the park closes, or stay overnight at a lodge or campsite in the park.
