Choosing the right car
For Kigali and the main paved roads to Musanze, Rubavu, Huye and Nyungwe, a Toyota RAV4 or Kia Sorento is comfortable and economical. Driving in Rwanda: the essentials
- Rwanda drives on the right-hand side of the road.
- Speed limits are low and enforced with cameras and police checks. Follow the posted signs, especially in towns and villages.
- Seatbelts are compulsory and using a phone while driving is not allowed.
- On the last Saturday morning of every month (Umuganda community work), most traffic stops until around midday. Plan travel for the afternoon.
- Fuel stations are easy to find in towns. Fill up before heading into Akagera or Nyungwe.

Where you can drive
Our cars are for travel anywhere within Rwanda. Popular self-drive routes from Kigali include Volcanoes National Park and Musanze, Akagera National Park, Nyungwe National Park and Lake Kivu. Cross-border travel to neighbouring countries is not included.

Frequently asked questions
Can foreigners rent a self-drive car in Rwanda?
Yes. Visitors can rent a self-drive car with a valid driving licence and a passport. If your licence is not in English or French, bring an International Driving Permit as well.
Is mileage limited?
No. All our rentals include unlimited mileage within Rwanda.
What happens if the car breaks down?
Call or WhatsApp us at +250 788 892 976. We offer 24/7 roadside help and will arrange a repair or a replacement car.
Can I take the car to Uganda, Tanzania or DRC?
No. Our cars are rented for travel within Rwanda only.
